Giving back

Time, effort, and personal connection.

Carl’s personal account of service spans local mentoring, disaster recovery, and church projects overseas.

The stories below draw on his written reflection, “Why I Became a Financial Planner.” They offer a personal perspective on the activities he participated in and the experiences that stayed with him.

Everyday opportunities to learn.

Carl recounts serving as a Boy Scout troop leader and spending time mentoring young people.

He describes picking up teenagers from the city and paying them to help rake leaves at his home. Alongside the work, he encouraged teamwork and planning, and helped them practice their multiplication tables.

In his reflection, Carl recalls that one of the young people later graduated from college in civil engineering. He shares this as a memorable part of his mentoring experience.

Helping homeowners after Katrina.

His service account includes traveling to Mississippi to help repair homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Carl describes paying for his own travel and contributing time and effort to help homeowners with repairs. The trip forms part of his account of hands-on work beyond his local community.

Projects farther from home.

Carl also describes joining church service trips to South Africa and South America.

His written account references work on an orphanage, a church, and clinics serving people affected by HIV/AIDS. He reflects on these experiences as rewarding opportunities to contribute to the lives of others.

Financial education in the workplace.

Education is another theme in Carl’s account of his professional life.

He describes invitations to present onsite Lunch & Learn retirement workshops at General Motors over many years. His account connects that work to the family experience that motivated his interest in financial planning.
